Honeycomb Reef Dish
Made using a mixture of hand building and throwing on the wheel, these dishes have a curved, bowl shaped interior with a raised, straight edge rim that angles slightly inwards. I’ve used a grey stoneware clay that fires with a lovely speckle. Once leather heard (the perfect stage between too wet and too dry) I’ve carved a honeycomb reef pattern on the inner and outer surfaces. Honeycomb Reef is found all over my local beach and is made by a worm from tiny specks of sand and shell.
This dish is glazed in a soft, satin-matt turquoise and has the speckle of the clay showing through in places. I’ve scraped the glaze off the rim, leaving the clay raw and burnished. The underside is unglazed.
Measures 8 cm high and 28 cm at the rim.
